My Muse

Working hard, writing this down.
Words on the page, words off the page.
Stuck for inspiration, don’t know what to do.

Where do I go? Who do I write?
Work out the plot, work out the pace.

Fabula and Syuzhet as one on the page.
Suddenly unhinged.
Scrap that, re-write this.

Make it fit, make it work.
Changing tone, changing pace.
Changing scenes, changing emotions.

Inspiration, imagination, intonation.
Characterisation, dramatisation, specification …
It’s all required
In part, in whole.
In truth, in life.

Think of the audience, think of the readers.
Prepare to fail, plan to win, don’t plan to lose.

When sentences stop, no words to flow, I turn to you.
You, my muse.
